Where to find resources for your adult student:

Read Write Now tutors are encouraged to access the resources available through their local Coordinator.  There is a vast range of books - readers and reference, videos and photocopiable worksheets for all levels of adult learning.

Gobsmackers is a range of fun adult reader books written and illustrated by adult literacy practitioners and produced by Read Write Now.  All RWN resource cupboards will have copies of these books and tips and worksheets can be downloaded from the Community Adult Literacy Foundation by clicking here.

Local libraries - look for RWN collection/orange and purple stickers on spines in general collection. RWN & the State Library entered into a partnership in 2000 to make it easier for adult learners to locate appropriate materials in the library. You can also request resources from the Special Needs catalogue in the State Library through your library.

Secondhand Bookshops - at the beginning and end of each year the University Bookshops are particularly good for 2nd hand ESL dictionaries.

Student’s own - but do not rely entirely upon them remembering to bring them in.

Student’s own experiences - eg whole language/time-line activities.

Internet – look at the
Links page on this site for some great ideas.

Newspapers including the West Australian and the local community papers – devise scavenger hunts, Mix and Match Title/Article, Cartoons etc.

Magazines, travel & information brochures etc.

Junk Mail – make your own e.g. repetitive sentence booklets.

Handouts & Worksheets

Two new handouts that have recently been developed for distribution during RWN Tutor training can now be downloaded for general tutoring use here -  The Grammar handout includes topics such as important verbs, tense, irregular verbs, useful terms and facts about sentence structure. The sheet is simply written and easy to follow and particularly useful if you are tutoring a CaLD student.  The Ideas for Lessons with your CaLD student provides and information and ideas for tutors working with students from a non-English speaking background.

When developing lesson plans for your adult student, a list of Consolidation Activities can certainly come in handy.  Go through this list for ideas and prompts on reading, writing and speaking activities to ensure these are covered in your tutoring sessions.

Do you need a blank Lesson Plan Framework as a guide to developing your plans each week?  Download one here.

Spelling Hot Tips has been developed to provide a quick reference guide for assisting your student with their spelling.  Ideas, tips and a couple of websites are listed.
A Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check sheet is available here to help your student with their spelling.

Have you looked at the new resources that can be found in your region's resource cupboard?  If you missed the article in the March 2009 Newsletter giving a short summary of each book and the level of student they are best suited to, click here.

Knowing the correct Cultural Etiquette for various countries can be helpful to tutors working with CaLD students.  A handout covering China, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand  and Vietnam can be downloaded here.  This document also contains a link to the cultural etiquette of other countries.

Need some ideas for FUN ways to end your tutoring session?  Try these.

Lined Paper can be downloaded from a number of internet sites but in the meantime if you are in need of some, try one of these.

3 inch spaced lines

Events such as ANZAC Day can be made a part of lesson plans. A short text either written at the appropriate level of your student or written as part of a Language Experience exercise can introduce the student to vocabulary relating to the topic. Then, a range of activities can be designed by you to assist your student. For examples of ANZAC Day worksheets, click here.

Write On! + Worksheets

The 2009 Write On magazine is now available.  A number of the stories have accompanying worksheets designed to be used as part of a learning program.  These worksheets are designed to give tutors ideas for lessons. If you have a copy of the magazine, click here to obtain all of the worksheets that have been developed.  Some stories from the magazine have been reproduced in the Write On! section of this website and you can access those and the worksheets to supplement them.  If you are a Read Write Now tutor and you do not have a copy of the magazine but would like to get one, contact Central Office on 1800 018 802.
