There is a vast range of adult literacy sites on the Internet and you need to be a little discerning (as with all things offered on this medium) as to how you and your student could benefit from the information.  A number of students place computer literacy as a high priority so interactive websites can be very beneficial. Some of the things to look for when searching for suitable websites for students include:

  • Websites that are easy for new readers to navigate
  • Pictures and symbols should clearly communicate information about the site to the user
  • Websites and pages that are overloaded with print can be confusing to students
  • Websites that contain a large number of downloads (text and photos) can be very slow
  • As a tutor, you need to look at any external links on a website first to ensure suitability.
  • A website with a large number of external links should possibly be avoided.

The literacy and numeracy links on the right of this screen have been sourced to assist literacy tutors and students.  They are checked on a regular basis but some addresses may change.
